DNA methylation is a very important kind of epigenetic modification and participates in many biological functions. Although many previous studies have addressed various plant species, the study of global DNA methylation pattern in response to microgravity conditions has been quite limited. In this report, we map the changes in Arabidopsis genome methylation patterns - at the single-base resolution - associated with microgravity conditions on board of the spacecraft SJ-10 mission in China.
The microbial tracking-1 (MT-1) investigation allowed the characterization of the microbial population aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Previous spaceflight experiments using Bacillus subtilis have reported altered transcriptome profiles during spaceflight compared to matching ground samples. This study tried to replicate those transcriptome changes using High Aspect Ratio Vessels (HARVs). B. subtilis spores were grown in HARVs using the same protocol and growth conditions as the BRIC-23 spaceflight mission. RNA was extracted from the HARV samples and sequenced for differential expression analysis. HARV differentially expressed genes were then compared to the genes identified as differentially expressed in the BRIC-23 mission to access the accuracy of HARVs as a model for spaceflight experiments.

The BRIC-21 mission was designed to identify the response of Bacillus subtilis to the human spaceflight environment. For this mission, samples were grown in rich-medium using the Biological Research in Canister Petri Dish Fixation Units (BRIC-PDFU) spaceflight hardware. B. subtilis spores were inoculated during spaceflight, grown at the ambient ISS temperature, and frozen in the onboard -80 C freezer prior to returning to Earth. RNA was extracted from samples grown onboard the International Space Station (ISS) and matching Ground Controls for transcriptome analysis.

Articular and sterno-costal cartilages were isolated from skeletally-mature mice flown for 30 days on the BION-M1 mission. Samples were characterized histologically for proteoglycan loss and at the gene expression levels using Affymetrix gene arrays.
Space radiations and microgravity both could cause DNA damage in cells, but the effects of microgravity on DNA damage response to space radiations are still controversial. A mRNA microarray and microRNA microarray in dauer larvae of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) that endured spaceflight environment and space radiations environment during 16.5-day Shenzhou-8 space mission were performed. In our study, wild type, dys-1 mutant and ced-1 mutant strains of C.elegans endured four conditions during shenzhou-8 spaceflight mission, including spaceflight static condition(ss), spaceflight 1-g centrifugal condition(sc), ground control condition(gc) and no-transport control. Limited to the quantity of worm samples, we performed technical-repeat test but not sample-repeat test.Accordingly, 12 mRNA microarrays were performed.

Data were generated as part of a NASA-funded study (Turek F (PI) et al. Effects of Spaceflight on Gastrointestinal Microbiota in Mice: Mechanisms and Impact on Multi-System. NASA NRA: NRA NNH14ZTT002N). As part of the study, we requested and received samples from RR1. We generated 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequence data from DNA extracted from fecal samples, and compared these data to similar data generated on shuttle mission STS-135 and from ground-based studies of radiation. We assessed effect of flight conditions and radiation.
